Fraud & AML Controls

Client
Gaming client, crypto and blockchain payments
Role
Account lead and delivery owner
Type
Fraud and AML integration
Status
Delivered

( Overview )

A gaming client taking crypto and blockchain payments was losing thousands of dollars to fraud. We added fraud detection, identity verification and AML screening, and fraud claims fell by more than 80%.

I owned the project end to end: scoping it, selling the fix, leading delivery with the developers and supervising quality.

The integration took four months. I then monitored the results for three months to compare against the period before.

What I did
  • Scoping
  • Selling the fix
  • Delivery lead
  • Quality supervision
  • SEON
  • Identity verification
  • AML screening
  • Before and after tracking

( The problem )

Three kinds of fraud, all costing real money.

Chargebacks, fake accounts and bonus abuse added up to thousands of dollars on a platform that takes crypto and blockchain payments.

( How it fits together )
  1. What was costing them

    • Chargebacks
    • Fake accounts
    • Bonus abuse
  2. Controls added

    • SEON fraud detection
    • Identity verification
    • AML screening
  3. What we measured

    • Fraud claims, before and after
    • Three months of monitoring

( What was put in place )04
01

Fraud detection

A SEON integration to score and catch suspicious activity.

02

Identity verification

Checks that stopped fake accounts at sign-up.

03

AML screening

Anti-money-laundering checks, which matter on a platform taking crypto and blockchain payments.

04

Quality supervision

I supervised quality alongside the development team and DevOps throughout the build.

( Process )

How it came together

Four months to go live, then three months of monitoring.

  1. 01 / Scope

    Size the problem

Chargebacks, fake accounts and bonus abuse mapped to the controls that would address them.

  2. 02 / Integrate, 4 months

    Build with the developers

Delivery of the SEON, identity-verification and AML integration, led and supervised by me.

  3. 03 / Monitor, 3 months

    Compare to before

We tracked fraud claims after launch against the period before.

( By the numbers )

  • 80%+

Drop in fraud claims, before and after

  • 4 months

    From kickoff to live

  • 3 months

    Monitored after launch

( Outcome )

Fraud claims fell by more than 80%, measured over three months against the period before the controls went in.
